How We Work Together

Getting the best results starts before the first cut. Here's how to help us build exactly what you're picturing.

Why Pictures Beat Descriptions

Here's the thing: words mean different things to different people. "Rustic" to one person is rough-hewn barn wood. To another, it's a smooth table with a vintage stain. "Simple bench" could mean a dozen different designs. A single reference image clears up what a hundred words can't.

When you show us what you're imagining, we can build it right the first time. No guesswork, no surprises. That's why we ask every customer to spend a few minutes gathering images before we start — it's the single most useful thing you can do to make sure you love the finished piece.

4 Simple Steps to Get Started

1

Google Your Project

Search for the type of furniture or woodwork you want. Browse the images and save anything that catches your eye. You don't need to find the perfect piece — just things that are in the right direction.

"custom wooden bench" "cedar planter box" "farmhouse dining table" "rustic bookshelf" "entryway bench with storage"
2

Circle What You Like

See a leg style you love on one piece? An edge profile on another? A handle or finish on a third? Circle it, draw an arrow, highlight it — whatever works. If there's a particular feature on something you like, just mark it up.

3

Mix and Match

You don't need ONE perfect image. Send us five different pictures with different features you like from each one. We can put together composite furniture from different references — the legs from one, the top from another, the finish from a third.

4

Send It Over

Text, email, or share a Pinterest board. The more images you send, the clearer the picture we have of what you want. Even one good reference image makes a huge difference.

Example of marking up a reference image - circling chair leg style you like

"I like these legs" — circle the features that catch your eye

"This edge style" — even a quick markup helps us understand your vision

What Helps Us Most

Bring as much of this as you can — but don't stress if you're missing some. We'll figure it out together.

  • Reference images with features marked up — the single most helpful thing you can provide
  • Photos of the space where the piece will go — multiple angles, include nearby furniture for scale
  • Measurements of the space — height, width, depth — or let us know you need help measuring
  • How it'll be used — kids? pets? heavy items? outdoors?
  • Wood or finish preferences — or "I'm not sure" is perfectly fine
  • Budget range — helps us suggest the right materials and approach
  • Any deadline — is there a date this needs to be ready by?

Common Questions

What if I can't find exactly what I want in one picture?

That's completely normal — and actually how most custom projects work. Send us multiple images and tell us which features you like in each one. We can build composite furniture that combines the best elements from different references.

Do I need professional drawings or blueprints?

Not at all. A few photos from Google Images, a Pinterest board, or even a quick phone photo of something you saw at a store is enough. The goal is to show us what you're picturing, not to produce architectural plans.

What if I'm not sure what I want yet?

Start by Googling your project type — "custom wooden bench", "cedar planter box", "farmhouse table". Browse for 10 minutes and save anything that appeals to you. That gives us a starting point to work from.

Can I just describe what I want over the phone?

You can, and we're happy to talk it through. But even one reference image alongside your description makes a huge difference. Words mean different things to different people — a picture removes the guesswork.
